Ten injured in Kazakh oil field unrest

ALMATY, Oct 20 (Reuters) - At least 10 people working in an oil field in Kazakhstan, being developed by a number of oil groups led by Chevron, were injured on Friday when violence broke out at a production facility, the company said.

Tengizchevroil, a venture developing the giant Tengiz field, said in a statement the "unrest" broke out among contractors building a second-generation plant near the deposit. The statement did not say what exactly happened there.

"Preliminary information indicates that approximately 10 individuals will require medical care outside of Tengiz but none of the injuries are life threatening," it said, adding that the construction side will remain closed pending investigation.

Other Tengiz shareholders are ExxonMobil with 25 percent, Kazakh state firm KazMunaiGas with 20 percent and a venture between BP and LUKOIL with five percent.

Tengiz is one of the world's biggest oilfields. Its recoverable reserves amount to around 1.3 billion tonnes of oil.
