TULKARM, West Bank, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Israeli troops killed a Palestinian militant in the occupied West Bank on Monday, witnesses and hospital officials said.

They said soldiers shot the Islamic Jihad member after surrounding his hideout in Thinnabi village, near the Palestinian-ruled town of Tulkarm. The Israeli forces had bulldozed the house in an apparent attempt to flush him out.

Israeli media reported that the Palestinian was killed in a shootout with the troops, and that an army officer was wounded.

A military spokeswoman confirmed the Israeli casualty but had no immediate comment on the death of the Islamic Jihad man.

"The operation is ongoing," she said.

Israeli forces frequently raid West Bank towns to hunt militants suspected of planning attacks on the Jewish state.
