BELGRADE, March 21 (Reuters) - A judge in southeastern Serbia died on Friday after being severely injured when an explosive device went off while he was opening the gate to leave his home for court, a colleague said.

President of the Knjazevac court Dragisa Cvejic sustained serious abdominal and leg injuries and was rushed to the city of Nis for surgery.

"We were informed that he passed away in the hospital," judge Miodrag Radosavljevic told Reuters.

"It is too early to reach conclusions about who did this. All we can confirm is that there have been some threats."

Radosavljevic said the attack might be connected to cases his colleague was working on, but did not elaborate.

"Our job can always carry dangers. There are always some parties in a trial who are dissatisfied with a ruling," he said.

Police sealed off the area and were awaiting experts from Belgrade to investigate the attack. (Reporting by Ljilja Cvekic and Ivana Sekularac; Editing by Giles Elgood)
