JERUSALEM, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Israel will allow former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin's convicted assassin to have a conjugal visit with the wife he married by proxy two years ago, officials said on Sunday.

Israeli authorities have until now refused Yigal Amir's requests for conjugal visits with his wife Larisa Trimbobler, citing security grounds for turning him down.

The Shin Bet security service has now decided there is little security risk involved, a Shin Bet official said.

"The date will be set in the coming days," a Prisons Service spokeswoman said. "It will start with one visit and every request will be examined."

Amir, an ultranationalist Jew shot Rabin at a peace rally in 1995 in a bid to derail peace talks with the Palestinians.

Civil liberties experts have argued marriage and having children are basic rights enjoyed by other convicted murderers in Israel, including Arabs jailed for political violence, and that Amir should be allowed to father a baby.

Yossi Lahmani, chief executive officer of the commemorative Rabin Center, described the move as a "wretched decision".

Amir, a former law student, is serving a life term with no chance for parole and created a national stir in 2004 when he married Trimbobler by proxy in a secret ceremony.

Trimbobler is a divorced mother of four who immigrated to Israel from the former Soviet Union. Her relationship with Amir began by correspondence and has only progressed to a few rare visits in the isolation block of the prison where Amir is held.

Rabbis declared the couple to have married under Jewish ritual law after Amir smuggled out a ring to Trimbobler using intermediaries. Israel's Justice Ministry gave Amir the go ahead earlier this year to artificially inseminate his wife after the couple appealed to the Supreme Court.

The Prisons Service spokeswoman confirmed Amir had sent sperm samples from jail in recent months.
