DAR ES SALAAM, Feb 23 (Reuters) - A U.N. court trying the perpetrators of Rwanda's 1994 genocide jailed a former youth leader for seven years on Friday for his role in the massacres that killed some 800,000 people.

Joseph Nzabirinda, who was arrested in Belgium in 2001, pleaded guilty in December to one count of murder.

"Trial Chamber II of the ICTR (International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda) today sentenced Nzabirinda to seven years imprisonment," the Tanzania-based court said in a statement.

The proceedings brought to 27 the number of people convicted by the tribunal in the northern town of Arusha. It has acquitted five people since it held its first trial in 1997, and has until the end of 2008 to complete its prosecutions, a deadline it is struggling to meet.
