BELGRADE, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Serbia on Wednesday banned the import of poultry and poultry products from Hungary and introduced control measures following an outbreak of bird flu in its northern neighbour. A veterinary office decree bans the "import and transit through Serbia of poultry and poultry products from Hungary", Serbia's Agriculture Ministry said in a statement. The office also introduced the supervision of poultry and wild fowl by veterinary teams and the control of the sale of domestic birds and food products, in line with measures earlier adopted in case of outbreaks of bird flu in the region. Hungarian authorities informed the European Commission on Wednesday of the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Csongrad County, in the southeast of the country. The area borders Serbia. It is the first such outbreak this year in the European Union. The ministry said Serbia would closely monitor any dead or sick birds in the area close to its border with Hungary. Serbia had reported its own bird flu cases in March last year but the outbreaks were contained and there have been no new cases since.
