Trial sought for Italian generals over Iraq deaths

ROME, May 24 (Reuters) - A Rome prosecutor asked a military tribunal on Thursday to order three Italian generals to stand trial for negligence in connection with the deaths of 19 Italians killed in a suicide bombing in Iraq in 2003.

The military prosecutor, Antonino Intelisano, said the three should face charges of neglecting proper security measures at the base that once housed Italy's contingent in Nassiriya.

The suicide bombing killed 19 Italians -- 17 military and two civilians -- in the country's worst military slaughter since World War Two. Eight Iraqis were also killed.

The three generals are accused of inadequately protecting the entrance to the base and not having a proper defence plan in place for possible suicide attacks, military sources said.

Italy had about 2,700 troops in Iraq at the time of the blast. All Italian troops withdrew last year.
