Gambia sentences woman to death for slaying husband

BANJUL, Sept 26 (Reuters) - A court in Gambia sentenced a Senegalese woman to death on Wednesday for killing her husband by pouring boiling oil over him after she grew suspicious the Muslim man was going to take a second wife.

Magistrate Harry Jammeh told Kanifing Court that the behaviour of Tabara Samb had been "shocking, cruel and deplorable."

"The prosecution has proven their case beyond reasonable doubt," he said in his judgement. "Now I am going to sentence you to death."

The tiny former British colony on Africa's western tip is more than 90 percent Muslim and is surrounded on three sides by Senegal. In recent years, it has become a popular destination for package tourism.

Polygamy is permitted in Islam with the limitation that men can have up to four wives but must try to treat them all equally.
