Russia says Georgia's law suit will hurt relations

MOSCOW, March 27 (Reuters) - Russia said on Tuesday that Georgia's appeal to the European Court of Human Rights over the deportation of Georgians from Moscow last year would further damage bilateral ties.

Russian authorities accused hundreds of Georgians of working illegally last autumn and forcibly deported them back to the south Caucasus republic.

Georgia filed a suit against Moscow to the European Court of Human Rights on Monday, accusing Russia of "flagrant abuses of the human rights" during the deportations. Georgia said seven of those deported had been ill and died on the return journey.

"The Georgian side has to clearly understand that this unfriendly step against Russia is bad news for bilateral relations," the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

The deportations followed a spying row between Georgia and its former Soviet master

Russia, enraged by Tbilisi's brief detention of four of its army officers on spying charges last October, cut rail, air and postal links with Georgia. Earlier last year Moscow banned imports of Georgian wines and mineral water.
