- Campaigners on behalf of undocumented Irish immigrants in the United States are pressing for a special immigration deal for Ireland after the Senate rejected a comprehensive reform bill that would have legalised 12 million illegal immigrants.

- Tomorrow's controversial Whiterock Orange parade in Belfast is expected to pass off peacefully after an accommodation was reached between the Orange Order and nationalist protesters.

- The Celtic Tiger has boosted the quality of life of most Irish people and national morale has never been better, a leading think-tank said yesterday.

- A town council has elected a Nigerian national as Ireland's first black mayor. Independent councillor Rotimi Adebari took up the robes and chains of Mayor of Portlaoise at a rousing reception yesterday afternoon.

- The housing shortage in Ireland's leading population centres will intensify over the next two years due to a slump in the amount of new homes getting planning permission, the construction industry warned yesterday.

- Ireland is joining a group of five EU countries opposed to any use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in a move that could lead to clashes with Irish farming interests.

- The earliest human settlement in the south west of Ireland has been discovered in a huge archaeological find on the Lakes of Killarney. Evidence of a human presence dating back 7,000 to 7,500 years has been found.
