Israeli president undergoes heart tests - media

JERUSALEM, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Israeli President Moshe Katsav, under pressure over allegations of rape and sexual harassment against him, underwent hospital tests on Tuesday after suffering chest pains, Israeli media said.

Katsav's spokeswoman Hagit Cohen refused to comment on the reports other than to say: "The president's condition is fine."

The reports on Israeli radio stations and newspaper Web sites said Katsav, 60, was admitted to the cardiac unit at the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem and then discharged after tests.

They followed rumours published by some Web sites, later denied, that Katsav had committed suicide.

Katsav has rejected a recommendation from Attorney-General Menachem Mazuz to suspend himself from duty while an investigation is under way into police allegations that he raped and molested several female staffers while president and in previous public offices.

Mazuz was expected to decide soon whether to press charges against Katsav.

The president's post is ceremonial rather than political post but the case has contributed to public bitterness over the war earlier this year against Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.
