JERUSALEM, Jan 16 (Reuters) - The Israeli army said on Friday an artillery shell laden with chemicals for creating a smokescreen caused an explosion that forced journalists from Reuters and other media to evacuate offices in Gaza this week. Two journalists working for Abu Dhabi Television were wounded in Thursday's incident, which occurred as they were filming fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas guerrillas about 1 km (just over half a mile) away. A military official, speaking anonymously, said the shell missed its target and hit the tower housing the offices of Reuters, Abu Dhabi TV and other media organisations. It was aimed at a compound close by, where troops were fighting gunmen defending Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar, the official said. The shell smashed into the 14th floor studios of Abu Dhabi Television, causing damage, slightly injuring two journalists and emitting black smoke that forced staff there and at Reuters, two floors below, to evacuate the building, disrupting coverage.
