Firebombs thrown at Egyptian embassy in Jakarta

CAIRO, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Assailants threw three firebombs at the Egyptian embassy in Jakarta and caused a small fire, but no one was injured, the ambassador said on Tuesday.

Ambassador Ahmed Al-Qawisny told state news agency MENA that the fire was quickly extinguished, and that security was stepped up at the embassy after the attack. The attack coincided with rising Arab and Islamic anger at U.S.-ally Egypt for continuing to keep the Gaza-Egypt border closed during Israel's recent military offensive in Gaza, essentially helping enforce an Israeli blockade of the Hamas-ruled strip. Egypt's president has accused Hamas of inviting the offensive by not extending a ceasefire that expired in December.

Qawisny said that Indonesians had held protests near the embassy in recent weeks over the situation in Gaza, but that they had been peaceful. An investigation into the attack was under way, MENA said. (Writing by Cynthia Johnston, editing by Mark Trevelyan)
