Police arrest three Germans over EU bomb in Kosovo

PRISTINA, Nov 20 (Reuters) - Kosovo police have arrested three German citizens suspected of throwing an explosive charge at the office of the European Union's special representative last week, a police spokesman said on Thursday.

"We have arrested three German citizens. We believe that these people were in Kosovo on a private visit and have nothing to do with any diplomatic mission," said Kosovo police spokesman Veton Elshani.

Last Friday's explosion caused only minor damage at the International Civilian Office (ICO), the office of EU Special Representative Pieter Feith which oversees the independence of Kosovo.

The blast followed the rejection by leaders of Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's amended plan for the deployment of the EU's police and justice mission (EULEX).

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in February after nine years under U.N. stewardship and is recognised by more than 50 countries.

Belgrade has embraced the plan that would put police, customs officials and judges in Serb-run areas of Kosovo under the umbrella of the UN, while Albanian areas would work with the EU mission, EULEX. (Reporting by Fatos Bytyci; editing by Adam Tanner and Sophie Hares)
