Stones thrown at Czech former PM on campaign stop

PRAGUE, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Four young men threw stones at former Czech prime minister Mirek Topolanek during a campaign stop ahead of an October election, injuring him slightly, his centre-right party said on Friday.

Topolanek, whose government held the European Union presidency earlier this year until it was toppled in a no confidence vote, was struck by one stone above his right eye but suffered only a minor injury and did not go to hospital.

There were no more details of the incident in Hustopece, a town in the southeast of the country. Police are investigating.

Topolanek's government fell halfway through its stint at the helm of the EU in March after the opposition teamed up with government rebels to vote it out.

His Civic Democrats are now running roughly even with the main leftist Social Democrats ahead of the Oct. 9-10 vote. (Reporting by Jan Korselt; Writing by Jana Mlcochova)
