Italy willing to open Tehran embassy to protesters

(Adds details) ROME, June 22 (Reuters) - Italy is willing to open its embassy in Tehran to wounded protesters in coordination with other European nations, the Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday. The move follows a Swedish initiative to look into whether European Union nations can put together a plan to take in and provide aid to demonstrators at their embassies in Iran, the ministry said. "The Italian embassy will be able to accept requests, despite the fact that the proper place for the care of the injured remains the hospital," Maurizio Massari, a spokesman for the foreign ministry, told reporters. Italy, which has called on Tehran to avoid further bloodshed and seek a peaceful solution to the protests, has already instructed its embassy in Iran to assist wounded protesters but has not yet received requests for help, the ministry said.
