NAIROBI, Feb 28 (Reuters) - A bomb has killed two people and wounded eight at a restaurant in western Eritrea in a rare attack in the Red Sea state, the government said on Saturday.

There was no immediate independent confirmation of the attack, which the information ministry's website www.shabait.com said happened on Wednesday. It said police were investigating.

"Two people were killed and eight others seriously injured when a bomb exploded at a restaurant in Haikota semi-urban centre," it said, adding that the wounded had been brought to the capital Asmara for treatment. It gave no other details.

Eritrea blamed Ethiopia for an earlier bomb attack in January 2008 that killed one person and wounded several others in another market town near the western border.

The two Horn of Africa neighbours fought a 1998-2000 frontier war that killed some 70,000 people. Tensions between Addis Ababa and Asmara remain high, and both governments routinely accuse each other of supporting rebel groups.
