CAIRO, Sept 28 (Reuters) - The Sudanese army killed six gunmen who it said were involved in the kidnapping of 11 Western tourists and eight Egyptians this month, Egypt's state-run Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported on Sunday.

The agency said the army detained two gunmen in a high-speed chase near the Egyptian border. The army said the two detained said the 19 tourists were held in a Chadian border area called Tabat al-Shjara "where clashes were still ongoing", according to MENA.

Sudanese army officials were not available for comment. Egyptian officials said on Saturday the hostages were in Sudan.

Egypt said four masked kidnappers seized the tourists and the eight Egyptians who were on safari in a remote border area and took them into Sudan. (Writing by Alaa Shahine; editing by Andrew Dobbie)
