Mild quake hits central Philippines, no damage

MANILA, Dec 21 (Reuters) - A mild earthquake rattled the central Philippines on Thursday but there were no immediate reports of damage or injury, an official said.

The 4.7 magnitude tremor was felt at 0755 am (2355 GMT) in central provinces still recovering from a slew of typhoons and its epicentre was under the Philippine Sea, 159 km (100 miles) northeast of Northern Samar province.

A spokesman for the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said they were not expecting any aftershocks or a tsunami from the quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake's intensity at 5.6.

Natural disasters are a constant threat in the Philippines, which sits on the Ring of Fire, a seismically active stretch of the Pacific Ocean. The country, which has 22 volcanoes, is also buffeted by typhoons from May to December.

In 1990, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed 1,600 people in the northern island of Luzon.
