MEXICO CITY, March 3 (Reuters) - Police in northern Mexico discovered $1 million worth of heroin stashed in the toilet of a bus heading toward the U.S. border, authorities said on Saturday.

Two people were arrested after anti-drug police pulled over the bus bound for the border city of Tijuana during a routine highway search and found more than 68 pounds (31 kg) of heroin in a secret compartment in the vehicle's bathroom, police said.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon has declared war on drug violence that killed 2,000 people last year, sending thousands of troops and police to hunt down traffickers shipping cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana to the United States.
