Landslide hits homes in southern Calif. beach town

LA JOLLA, Calif, Oct 3 (Reuters) - A landslide sent at least one home sliding downhill and buckled streets in the southern California beach town of La Jolla, police and residents reported on Wednesday.

Police evacuated residents and power was shut off to the area after the Wednesday morning slide. No injuries were immediately reported but police said it was too early to determine the extent of the damage.

One homeowner in the hilly area of million dollar-plus homes said the road was blocked by about 25 feet (7.5 metres) of dirt.

Ross Clark wrote on a newsblog on the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper Web site that he was "looking at the mountain going into my pool and the neighbor's house."

"I heard the fence starting to crack. I heard a tree coming down. We grabbed the dogs and ran," he said, adding that he and his wife returned a short time later.

The landslide occurred just a day after city officials warned that the hillside was unstable and was threatening as many as eight houses.
