GUATEMALA CITY, Jan 4 (Reuters) - At least 22 people died in northern Guatemala on Sunday when part of a mountain collapsed on a walking trail, emergency authorities told Reuters.

The landslide happened in a sparsely populated area in the district of Alta Verapaz, 124 miles (200 km) from Guatemala City.

Emergency workers were still looking for more victims on Sunday night.

Landslides are common in Guatemala, but usually occur during the rainy season between June and November.

Hugo Arvizu, a spokesman for Guatemala's disaster relief commission CONRED, said the landslide was caused by a local geological fault. (Reporting by Sarah Grainger; Editing by Eric Walsh)
