(Updates injury toll) By John Rondy MILWAUKEE, Dec 6 (Reuters) - A massive gas explosion killed three people and leveled two buildings at an industrial complex near downtown Milwaukee on Wednesday, officials said. Mayor Tom Barrett, who announced the deaths, said there were 46 people injured, one of whom was in critical condition. All the workers had been accounted for, he said. Heavy equipment was brought in to dig through the smoking rubble. Milwaukee Police Chief Nannette Hegerty said: "This appears to be a tragic accidental situation," not related to terrorism or any criminal activity. Investigators said the blast appeared to have originated in a 170,000-pound (77,110-kg) propane tank at a Falk Corp. parts distribution center, destroying that building and an adjoining structure. Local media quoted workers at the plant as saying they were told just before the blast that a gas leak was being repaired. It was not clear how many people were working in the complex when the explosion occurred, but Fire Chief William Wentland said about 500 employees were taken by bus to nearby Miller Park, the major league baseball field, for processing and to be picked up by their families. He said safety inspectors were last at the plant in September and any problems would have been corrected at that point. Falk has manufactured large industrial gears at the 10-building complex since the late 19th century. It is owned by Rexnord Corp., a unit of RBS Global Inc.
