WASHINGTON, Nov 7 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake with 6.3 magnitude struck the New Britain region of Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The Pacific Tsunami Center said there was no threat of a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami but it said earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis.

The temblor, which occurred at 12:38 p.m. EST (1738 GMT) on Tuesday, or 3:38 a.m. local time on Wednesday, was centered about 340 miles (550 km) northeast of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, USGS said.
