CALGARY, Alberta, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Trevis Smith, once a star Canadian Football League player, was found guilty on Thursday of aggravated sexual assault after having unprotected sex with two women without telling them he was HIV positive, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said. Smith, a former star with the University of Alabama Crimson Tide in the 1990s, played as a linebacker for seven seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders club in the eight-team Canadian league. He was charged in 2005 after a woman complained to police. HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, can cause AIDS. On its Web site, the CBC said a Saskatchewan Provincial Court judge found the 30-year-old Smith guilty after deciding his testimony was less credible than that of the two victims. The charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. Under Canadian law, anyone who has tested positive for HIV must tell partners of their status before having sex without the protection of a condom.
