WASHINGTON, April 9 (Reuters) - The U.S.-flagged freighter Maersk Alabama -- which was hijacked briefly in the Indian Ocean on Wednesday before the crew regained control -- is headed for Mombasa, Kenya, with an 18-man armed guard aboard, the father of the ship's second in command said on Thursday.

Captain Joe Murphy told CNN he had been told this by the ship's operators, Maersk Line Ltd. The ship had about "50 hours of steaming time" before it would reach Mombasa, Murphy said.
