False fire alarm sounds on space station

HOUSTON, June 12 (Reuters) - A fire alarm sounded on the International Space Station on Tuesday, but astronauts on board quickly determined it was a false alarm thought to have been caused by a software problem.

The station crew began to go through emergency procedures, but stopped when they found no fire or smoke in the section of the $100 billion station where the alarm occurred.

"It appears it is a software problem. There is no fire," newly arrived station crew member Clayton Anderson radioed to Mission Control.

Anderson arrived at the station on Sunday aboard the space shuttle Atlantis, which is scheduled to be docked with the station until next Tuesday.
