Tropical storm Humberto reaches hurricane strength

WASHINGTON, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Tropical storm Humberto has been upgraded to hurricane status, and carries maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (128 kph) as it heads for the coast of southeastern Texas, the U.S. National Hurricance Center said on Thursday.

The NHC update at 1:15 a.m. EDT (0515 GMT) was based on data received from hurricane reconnaissance aircraft and doppler radar.
