US appeals court orders halt to Demjanjuk deport

CLEVELAND, April 14 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday granted a stay to accused Nazi death camp guard John Demjanjuk in a ruling that acknowledged the prospect of his imminent deportation to Germany by U.S. authorities.

Demjanjuk's son petitioned the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati to consider whether deporting his 89-year-old father to Germany amounted to torture, because of what his family said is his frail health. Demjanjuk was removed from his suburban Cleveland home in a wheelchair.

U.S. prosecutors said the court lacked jurisdiction, which two appeals court judges said was an issue it needed to consider before lifting the stay.
