NEW YORK, March 16 (Reuters) - The wife of murdered U.S. reporter Daniel Pearl said on Friday she remained determined to celebrate life even as the man who said he masterminded the Sept. 11 attacks claimed responsibility for his death.

"The more people like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed spread fear, the more determined I am to resist by celebrating the values of humanism and dignity," Mariane Pearl said in a statement.

"The only way to fight terrorism is to exercise self-control over the natural feelings of disgust and horror that his declarations provoke."

Mohammed said at a hearing at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp last Saturday that he beheaded Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter, in Pakistan in 2002, according to a Pentagon transcript released on Thursday.

Some experts have suggested that Mohammed, who U.S. officials say was al Qaeda's external operations chief, may have been exaggerating his own importance.
