(Updating, one dead in grocery roof collapse)

HOUSTON, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Remnants of Tropical Storm Erin flooded Houston on Thursday, causing a grocery store roof to collapse, killing one person.

As much as 6 inches of rain fell across Houston, inundating freeways and snarling traffic, after the storm came ashore 175 miles (281 km) down the Texas Coast on Thursday.

One person died and another was injured when the roof over the loading dock area of a grocery store in southeast Houston collapsed, Assistant Fire Chief Jack Williams said.

Television reports showed people evacuating their vehicles, wading through waist-deep water and fighting through traffic jams.

Houston is a big refining and petrochemical center but companies said operations had not been affected at midday Thursday.

Erin came ashore early on Thursday 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Corpus Christi. Its top sustained winds had slipped to 35 mph (56 km) but forecasters warned of heavy rains across much of southern and central Texas.

The state already has been soaked by heavy rain this summer.
