Argentine leader says Fidel Castro looks "very good"

BUENOS AIRES, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, whose long seclusion since a 2006 operation has raised concerns about his health, met Argentine President Cristina Fernandez on Wednesday and she said he looked "very good".

"We talked about everything. He looked very good to me. We talked about the international situation," Fernandez was quoted as saying by Argentina's official news agency, Telam.

Castro, 82, has been seen only in occasional videos and photos since he underwent surgery in July 2006 for an undisclosed intestinal ailment that later forced him to cede power to his younger brother, Raul Castro.

In recent months, a prolonged halt to Castro's output of newspaper columns has raised concerns his health may be declining, and he was notably absent early this month from the 50th anniversary celebrations of the revolution that swept him to power.

But his meeting with Fernandez could calm speculation that his condition is serious.

She said Castro told her he had watched the inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama on television on Tuesday.

Fernandez was on a four-day visit to Cuba and had not been expected to meet with Fidel Castro. Her visit ended on Wednesday. (Reporting by Fiona Ortiz; Editing by Kieran Murray)
