BOGOTA, July 24 (Reuters) - A landslide in impoverished western Colombia killed 5 people as they panned for gold in a river near the Pacific coast and about 25 more prospectors were missing in the disaster, local officials said on Friday. "About 30 people were caught in the avalanche. Five bodies have been recovered," said Iber Lopez, mayor of the town of Novita, Choco province, where the landslide occurred. Informal miners and prospectors are regularly hurt and killed in landslides while looking for gold in the province. Emergency workers were trying to rescue the remaining victims and local authorities have asked the national government for help with the effort, Lopez said.
