RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 30 (Reuters) - At least 11 people were killed and 63 injured when a train packed with homeward-bound commuters rammed into another train on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro on Thursday.

More than 100 rescue workers were helping move people from the wreckage in the evening darkness, said a spokeswoman for the mayor's office of Nova Iguacu, a suburb of Rio. Dozens of ambulances were at the crash site.

Firefighters said the death toll could rise.

A fire brigade spokesman said two of the dead were train crewmen but the Supervia train company said both were alive.

One of the trains was switching between tracks and the other rammed into the end of the train, said Supervia operations director, Joao Gouveia. He estimated around 800 people were on the passenger train but the second train was empty except for the crew.

GloboNews television showed footage of the wreckage with one carriage lying on its side and rescue workers trying to get people out.
