TORONTO, Jan 31 (Reuters) - A Canadian soldier died on Saturday when his vehicle hit an explosive device on a road west of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan, a newspaper reported. Canadian military authorities were not immediately available to confirm the report on the Globe and Mail's website (http://www.theglobeandmail.com). The soldier -- identified as Sapper Sean David Greenfield, age 25 -- was the 108th member of the Canadian military killed since Canada sent forces to Afghanistan in 2002. The other soldiers in the vehicle were not injured, the Globe and Mail said, quoting Brigadier-General Denis Thompson, commander of coalition troops in Kandahar. There are some 2,700 Canadian soldiers in Kandahar, capital of a region that is a stronghold for Taliban militants. The combat mission is set to end in 2011.
