BEIJING, Oct 29 (Reuters) - A Chinese crane container carrying 23 construction workers plunged to the ground, killing 11 and injuring 12, state media said on Wednesday.

The accident happened in heavy rain on Tuesday at a bridge under construction near Chongqing, in southwest China, when the steel cable suddenly snapped, Xinhua news agency reported.

Nine workers died when the container hit the bridge and two died on the way to hospital, the report said.

Eleven of the 12 injured workers were in a serious condition, it added.
