BEIJING, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Chinese police have detained an unlicensed driver for steering an overloaded school bus off a bridge, killing eight children and injuring 39, state television said on Wednesday.

The bus, supposed to carry a maximum 26 people, had 50 primary school children and two adults onboard on Tuesday when it overturned and plunged into a river in Shuangcheng, near Harbin, capital of the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, CCTV said.

The driver, who did not have a bus licence, had been detained pending criminal charges, CCTV said, adding the bus service was also unauthorised.

Of the 39 injured students, one remained in critical condition on Wednesday, CCTV said, showing pictures of the wrecked bus on the bank of a largely frozen river.
