July 22 (Reuters) - Following are security developments in Iraq at 1830 GMT on Sunday:

* Indicates a new or updated item.

* BAGHDAD - The bodies of 16 people were found across Baghdad in the past 24 hours, police said.

* BAGHDAD - A mortar round killed one person and wounded two others when it landed in central Baghdad's commercial area of Bab al-Sharji, police said.

* BAGHDAD - Gunmen killed one pedestrian and wounded two others in a drive-by shooting on a major road in central Baghdad, police said.

* TAJI - Five Sunni tribal leaders opposed to al Qaeda were killed and 12 others wounded when a suicide bomber drove a minivan packed with about half a tonne of explosives into a house where they were meeting in Taji north of Baghdad, police said. The U.S. military said three locals had died and no tribal leaders were among the dead.

* BAGHDAD - At least three people were killed and 20 others wounded when a parked motorcycle exploded in Khulani square in central Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - Iraqi soldiers killed five insurgents in different parts of Iraq over the past 24 hours, the Iraqi army said in a statement.

SHANAFIYA - Gunmen killed a policeman in the town of Shanafiya, 90 km (60 miles) west of the southern Iraqi city of Diwaniya, police said.

BASRA - A British soldier was killed on Saturday after a projectile landed on Basra Palace, a base used by British forces in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, Britain's Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

BAGHDAD - Gunmen shot dead police Brigadier Falah Khalaf in northern Baghdad's Ur district, police said.

BAGHDAD - At least one civilian was killed and five wounded by a roadside bomb attack on a minibus in eastern Baghdad's Amin district, police said.

ISKANDARIYA - At least two people were killed and four others wounded in a mortar attack in Iskandariya, 40 km (25 miles) south of Baghdad, police said.

ISKANDARIYA - The bodies of five people, all with gunshot wounds and showing signs of torture, were found in Iskandariya on Saturday, police said.

ISKANDARIYA - A woman was killed and a child wounded when three mortar rounds hit a residential area in Iskandariya late on Saturday, police said.

KUT - Gunmen in a car shot and killed a translator working for the U.S. military in the Shi'ite city of Kut, 170 km (100 miles) south of Baghdad on Saturday evening, police said.

KUT - Gunmen killed a policeman in Kut late on Saturday, police said.
