SEOUL, Aug 21 (Reuters) - The following is a summary of major South Korean newspapers on Tuesday, prepared by Reuters in Seoul. Reuters has not checked the stories and does not guarantee their accuracy.

CHOSUN ILBO

- South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun sent a personal letter of condolence to North Korean leader Kim Jong-il over the heavy flood damage in the North, according to the Blue House.

DONG-A ILBO

- In a Dong-A Ilbo poll taken immediately after the main opposition Grand National Party's primaries, presidential nominee Lee Myung-bak's approval rating rose to 56.6 percent from 39.5 percent last week.

- The former ruling Uri Party officially joined the United New Democratic Party, composed of civic leaders and defectors from minority liberal parties, to become the country's largest party.

MAEIL BUSINESS NEWSPAPER

- U.S. private equity firm Providence Equity Partners has decided to participate in the bidding for hanarotelecom inc <033630.KQ>, according to an industry source.

- Samsung Group's [SAGR.UL] earnings for the second half will be similar to last year's, said vice chairman Lee Hak-soo.

- GS Group may buy Daewoo International Corp <047050.KS> if the price is right, said GS Group chairman Huh Chang-soo.

KOREA ECONOMIC DAILY

- Macquarie Bank <MBL.AX> and private equity fund MBK Partners may form a consortium to buy cable TV operator C&M, according to banking industry sources.
