SINGAPORE, March 24 (Reuters) - A leak of an unknown gas in a Singapore shopping centre on Monday sent 18 people to hospital complaining of breathing difficulties, a government official said.

The official declined to comment on whether the leak at Golden Landmark Shopping Complex in central Singapore was deliberate or an accident, with investigations still going on.

"Investigations showed a small quantity of unknown gas that was released on the first storey of the building somewhere near the exterior of a staircase," N. Subhas, director of public affairs for the Singapore Civil Defence Force, told Reuters.

"We conducted checks and there are no more traces of the gas found in the building, the situation is under control," he said.

The injured, including an infant, were sent to Singapore General Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital for treatment. The hospitals could not be reached for comment.

Singapore has tightened its security in recent weeks after the escape last month of the alleged Singapore leader of an Islamic militant group from the toilet of a detention centre. (Reporting by Melanie Lee; editing by Neil Chatterjee)
