-- Chinese state companies are likely to pay dividends for the first time in more than a decade next year, potentially trimming China's investment boom and raising tax revenues.

-- The battle for control of Seibu came to a head when members of the Japanese conglomerate's founding family launched an unprecedented 10 billion yen lawsuit against, among others, their own brother, a U.S. private equity fund and Seibu Railway.

-- Investors are pouring billions of dollars into "renewable" energy sources such as ethanol and solar power that promise to reduce reliance on petroleum. But exploiting these alternatives may produce unintended environmental and economic consequences that could offset many of the expected benefits.
