JAKARTA, Dec 1 (Reuters) - A large fire destroyed a departure terminal at Medan airport in Indonesia's North Sumatra province late on Saturday, police said.

A police officer in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, said the cause of the fire was unknown.

"No one was injured in the fire and fire fighters have managed to put out the blaze at a departure terminal," police officer P. Pangaribuan said by telephone.

Television footage showed the domestic departure terminal at Polonia airport badly damaged as fire fighters struggled to douse the flames. (Reporting by Telly Nathalia, Writing by Ahmad Pathoni, Editing by Ed Davies)
