SRINAGAR, India, Aug 6 (Reuters) - The Indian army said its troops came under fire on Wednesday from across a military control line dividing Kashmir between India and Pakistan. The shooting took place in north Kashmir's Nowgam sector, where the two armies exchanged fire for 16 hours last week in the worst violation of a 2003 ceasefire. "Our military post briefly came under small arms fire," Indian army spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel A. K. Mathur said. "It is not clear yet whether it was a militant attack or firing by Pakistani soldiers." There have been a spate of clashes in the past few months along the Line of Control, the de facto border dividing Kashmir, after relative calm that followed the start of a peace process between the nuclear-armed rivals in 2004. India's government said in July that the peace process was "under stress". The statement came soon after a bomb attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul that killed at least 58 people and reports of firing along the Line of Control. The two countries have fought two of three wars over Kashmir, which they claim in full but rule in part, after independence from Britain in 1947.
