Australian bushfire toll rises to 35 - police

SYDNEY, Feb 8 (Reuters) - The death toll in a deadly Australian bushfire rose to 35 on Sunday, police said as they retrieved bodies from the ruins of fires that raced through towns and farmlands north of the city of Melbourne.

Police fear the toll in the bushfire in the southern state of Victoria could still rise further, possibly as high as 40.

Australia's worst bushfires occurred in 1983 when 75 people were killed in Victoria. (Reporting by Mark Bendeich; Editing by David Fox)
