BEIJING, April 17 (Reuters) - Nineteen workers were swept to their deaths by the rising tide while working on a seaweed farm in east China's Jiangsu Province, the Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday.

Twenty-one workers rode three tractors to tend to a plantation while the tide was out, but only two of the workers escaped the fast rising tide while the others were swept out to sea, Xinhua quoted rescuers as saying.

Local authorities mobilised thousands of people and hundreds of tractors and boats to search for the missing workers, it said.
