TOKYO, Aug 17 (Reuters) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 hit near islands in southern Japan off the eastern coast of Taiwan on Monday, a Japanese government agency said, but there were no immediate reports of damage. The quake, at 9:11 a.m. (0011 GMT), struck near Japan's Ishigaki Island, an area 223 km (138 miles) east of Taiwan, said the Japan Meteorological Agency and the U.S. Geological Survey.
