TOKYO, Nov 14 (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama pledged pragmatic cooperation with China, saying in a major speech on Asia on Saturday that Washington did not seek to contain China.

"As with any nation, America will approach China with a focus on our interests," Obama said in his speech, delivered in Tokyo.

"And it is precisely for this reason that it is important to pursue pragmatic cooperation with China on issues of mutual concern -- because no one nation can meet the challenges of the 21st century alone, and the United States and China will both be better off when we are able to meet them together."

Obama praised China's "partnership" in efforts to jumpstart economic recovery, saying Beijing had promoted security and stability in Afghanistan and Pakistan, was committed to global nonproliferation and was supporting denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

"The rise of a strong, prosperous China can be a source of strength for the community of nations." (Reporting by Patricia Zengerle; Writing by Rodney Joyce)
