WFP and CATERPILLAR
In January 2009, Caterpillar, the world's largest maker of construction equipment, teamed up with the World Food Programme Logistics via Friends of WFP USA. Caterpillar has agreed to donate US$1 million per year for five years for WFP to purchase and/or rent/ lease equipment from certified Caterpillar dealers globally. To date, seven countries have received money from the Caterpillar fund: Somalia purchased four forklifts for the Mombasa Port in Kenya to speed up port operations; Tanzania acquired two forklifts for improvements needed in the Port of Kigoma; DRC
bought a tractor for a road rehabilitation operation to improve the trucking capacity in North Kivu and Pakistan attained three forklifts, two generators and spare parts for the Pir Piai base where relief items are received, stored and dispatched for the humanitarian community. Most recently,Central African Republic and Togo received funds to purchase generators. Funds will also support an expert mission to assess road rehabilitation equipment in Sudan.
