Turkana women skin slaughtered goats at a livestock de-stocking centre in the Loyoro village of Turkana district in North-western Kenya, October 1, 2009. The European Commission Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) organised the de-stocking of livestock due to a severe and prolonged drought in the region. At the Loyoro project, ECHO is buying livestock, slaughtering and distributing the meat as relief food to the most affected families - the old, sick, orphaned, and widowed. The Turkana people are among the worst affected by the drought since they have also lost the ability to migrate as a result of conflict with the neighbouring communities.
