A demonstrator speaks during a protest rally in central Grozny January 16, 2009. A Russian colonel jailed for murdering a Chechen girl was freed early from prison on Thursday, provoking indignation in Chechnya where one local official suggested he should be put to death. Mostly Muslim Chechnya, whose society is based on close-knit clan relations and ancient blood feud traditions are widely practised, was rocked by protest rallies last month when a court in central Russia ruled that Colonel Yuri Budanov should be granted early release after serving 10 years for the murder of 18-year-old Elza Kungayeva.
